Turkmenistan’s Ashgabat is world’s most expensive city for foreign workers

As per the 2021 Cost of Living Survey by consultancy firm Mercer, Turkmenistan’s capital, Ashgabat has been named the world’s most expensive city for foreign workers.
It is followed by Hong Kong at second position, Beirut (Lebanon) and Tokyo (Japan) at third and fourth place respectively.
Among Indian cities, Mumbai is the most expensive city. It is ranked at 78th position. In 2020, it was placed at 60th place.
Other Indian cities in the list are New Delhi (117), Chennai (158), Bengaluru (170), and Kolkata (181).
The 2021 Mercer Cost of Living Survey has ranked 209 cities across five continents.
The cities were ranked by measuring the comparative cost of more than 200 items, including housing, transportation, food, clothing, household goods, and entertainment.
The survey used New York City as the base city and currency movements were measured against the US dollar.
