'Jal Shakti Abhiyan: Catch the Rain’

Context: Prime Minister of India launched  the “Jal Shakti Abhiyan: Catch the Rain” campaign on the occasion of World Water Day.

  • The Jal Shakti Abhiyan is the Jal Shakti ministry’s flagship water-conservation campaign.

Key highlights

  • The campaign will be undertaken across the country, in both rural and urban areas, with the theme "catch the rain, where it falls, when it falls".
  • During the campaign, geotagging of all water bodies throughout the nation will be carried out, which shall form the basis for assessment of the rejuvenation efforts for water bodies across the country.
  • NITI Aayog says that nearly 600 million Indians face “high to extreme water stress” and the country’s water demand is likely to double by 2030, potentially costing a 6% loss in gross domestic product by 2050.
  • It will be launched as a Jan Andolan to take water conservation at the grass-root level through people's participation.
  • It is intended to nudge all stakeholders to create rainwater harvesting structures suitable to the climatic conditions and subsoil strata, to ensure proper storage of rainwater.
