DHBVN launches drive to check power thefts

The Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (DHBVN) has launched a drive to check power thefts and line losses following high demand for electricity in this sweltering heat in Haryana. The drive was launched in the first week of June.

Background :

  • The incidence of line losses, which were around 7.3 per cent in March, had been increasing since the start of the summer season.
  • At present, line losses are pegged at minimum 10 per cent owing to the sharp rise in demand for power.
  • In March, the average daily supply of power was recorded around 1.6 crore units. With the onset of summer, the demand has shot up. In June, 1.9 crore units were supplied. This means that line losses must have increased by three to four per cent.

Highlights :

  • Teams have been set up — one each for all 18 subdivisions in the Faridabad circle — to detect power thefts and line losses.”
  • Line losses can be due to technical reasons, while thefts contributed to less than 50 per cent of the total line losses (7.3 per cent).
