- Lewis Henry Morgan is considered the first significant contributor to the study of kinship systems. He developed a systematic classification of kinship terms and presented his findings in "Systems of Consanguinity and Affinity of the Human Family" (1871).
- Edward Burnett Tylor focused on cultural evolution and is known for introducing the concept of animism; he did not specialize in kinship.
- Bronislaw Malinowski is famous for his fieldwork in the Trobriand Islands and contributions to functionalism but not for the initial study of kinship terms.
- Alfred Radcliffe-Brown played a considerable role in advancing structural-functionalism in anthropology and emphasized the social structure but not specifically in the context of early kinship term study.
