Politics could be a 'science' like Physics if only...
Politicians took more rational decisions.
the conduct of human beings was completely predictable.
Researchers were more painstaking in assembling their evidence.
Students of politics wore white coats and worked in laboratories.
The main problem for those who want to claim that the study of politics is 'scientific' in the same way as natural science is that human beings are unpredictable. Although the methodology of natural science is not necessarily as 'objective' as some people believe, the study of human beings is obviously more vulnerable to the intrusion of bias, and findings will be open to objection even if the research is conducted with exemplary rigour. While some students of politics use rationality as a key to understanding human behaviour, ultimately what counts as 'rational' is a matter of opinion. The status of 'political science' as an academic discipline is not affected by the places in which students work, or the kind of clothing they wear.
