Authority is best understood as...
something which is guaranteed to anyone who holds a high office of state.
the strength to impose one's will.
the possession of legitimate power.
having a lot of admirers within the media
Although, as Max Weber argues, holders of high office are well placed to command authority, they are not guaranteed to retain it, regardless of their conduct. Equally, authority is not synonymous with the ability to impose one's will; if one has authority, decisions are accepted without having to be enforced. Having a lot of media admirers is probably an advantage, but politicians can actually lose authority if they try to curry favour with the media at the expense of sound decision-making.
