Before World War I, the Christian Armenian population demanded rights within the Ottoman Empire. They were met with a fierce military resistance. Many were killed. Then, during and after World War I, Armenians suffered deportation, starvation, forced marches, torture, and execution. An estimated one million people were killed in the atrocities. The killing ended In 1923. Though considered by many to be genocide, the Turkish government denied such claims.
