For the first several years of leadership, Lenin fought a civil war against the anti-Bolsheviks. He was a brutal leader. He stomped out all opposition, killing anyone who spoke out against his government. During the Russian Civil War, Lenin established War Communism. Under War Communism the government owned everything and soldiers could take what they needed from the peasants. When the Bolsheviks finally won the civil war, Lenin established the Soviet Union in 1922. It was the first communist country in the world.
