What is classical peacekeeping?
Classical peacekeeping involves the establishment of a UN force under UN command to be placed between parties to a dispute after a ceasefire.
UN forces under UN command likely to use force to achieve humanitarian ends
UN forces under UN command used when order has collapsed within states
UN forced deployed on an emergency basis to prevent genocide or ethnic cleansing.
Classical peacekeeping mandates are based on Chapter VI of the UN Charter. It involves the consent of the host state and can only take place after the negotiation of a ceasefire. UN forces are placed between the parties to secure this ceasefire and will only use weapons in self-defence.
