Anita went to a shop and bought two varieties of pens, costing Rs.7 and Rs.9 each. She gave Rs.100 to the shopkeeper and got back Rs.30 from the shopkeeper. How many pens did she buy in total?
6
7
8
cannot be determined
Let the number of 1st kind of pen is x and of 2nd kind is y. Hence 7x + 9y = 70 (Here 70 Rs. is the overall expense) For x and y :- Put x = 10, y = 0. These Values will satisfy the equation. But as they said she buys two varieties. So y can’t be 0. Now the values which will satisfy are x = 1 and y = 7. So she buys x + y pens. i.e (1 + 7) = 8.
Hence, option 3 is the correct answer.
