Four horses are tethered at four corners of a square plot of side 14 m so that the adjacent horses can just reach one another. There is a small circular pond of area 20 m2 at the centre. Find the ungrazed area.
22 m2
24 m2
32 m2
28 m2
When adjacent horses can just touch each another, it means that they meet halfway along the side of the square i.e. is 7 metre. The radius of the quarter circle is 7 metre. Four quarter circles makes one circle of radius 7 m and this area = (7 x 7) m2 or 154 m2. The plot has an area of 14 x 14 = 196 m2. The horses will have to stray away from the grass in area 196 – 154 = 42 square metre. But there is a pond of 20 m2. So the area left ungrazed is 42 – 20 = 22 m2.
