A train travels at an average of 50 miles per hour for 2x1/2 hour and then travels at a speed of 70 miles per hour for 1x1/2 hours. How far did the train travel in the entire 4 hours?
130 miles
150 miles
190 miles
230 miles
There are two parts in the journey of train.
In first part of journey, Speed of train = 50 miles per hour Time = 2 × 1/2 hours = 2.5 hours So distance covered,D1 = Speed × Time => D1 = 50 × 2.5 miles => D1 = 125 Miles
In second part of journey, Speed of train = 70 miles/hour Time = 1 × 1/2 hours = 1.5 hours => Distance covered,D2 = Speed × Time => D2 = 70 × 1.5 = 105 miles.
So overall total distance covered by train in both parts of journey = D1 + D2 = 125 + 105 = 130 Miles.
Hence, option 1 is the correct answer.
