An express train travelled at an average speed of 100 km/hr, stopping for 3 minutes after 75 km, A local train travelled at a speed of 50 km/hr, stopping for 1 minute after every 25 km. If the trains began travelling at the same time, how many kms did the local train travel in the time it took the express train to travel 600 km?
307.5 km
900 km
1000 km
1200 km
Effective time taken by express train in covering 75 km = (60/100 × 75 + 3) minutes = 48 minutes Time taken in covering 600 km = (48 × 7 + 45) minutes = 336 + 45 = 381 minutes Effective time taken by local train in covering 25 km = 31 minutes ∴ Distance covered in 9 minutes = 50/60 × 9 = 7.5 km Distance covered in (31 × 12) minutes = 12 × 25 = 300 km Total distances = 300 + 7.5 = 307.5 km
