    A boat, while going downstream in a river covered a distance of 50 miles at an average speed of 60 miles per hour. While returning because of the water resistance, it took one hour fifteen minutes to cover the same distance. What was the average speed during the whole journey?

    Explanation:

    DISTANCE  = SPEED  X TIME 

    50 = 60 x Time 

    time for the case 1 = 5/6 hours 

    simillarly time for the second case is ( 1+ 15/60 ) = 1+ 1/4 = 5/4 hr 

    Average speed = Total distance / total time taken 

    total time taken = 5/6 + 5/4 = 25/12 

    total distance = 60 + 40 = 100

    =  100 / ( 25/12) 
       ( 100 x 12 ) / 25 = 48 mph
