Explanation:

18/(x + y) + 12/(x - y) = 3 . …………. (i)
24/ (x + y) + 36/(x - y) = 13/2 …………. (ii)
Note: In such type of Question, take common values of same types of distance and satisfy the given equation.
Downstream distance:
On putting x + y = 12 and = x – y = 8
both the equation are satisfied.
Therefore, y = (12 – 8)/2 = 4/2 km/hr =2.5 km/hr
