The electricity bill of a transportation company is partly fixed and partly varies as the number of units of electricity consumed. When in a certain month 1080 units are consumed, the bill is Rs 4000. In another month 1330 units are consumed and the bill is Rs. 4500. In yet another month 450 units are consumed. The bill for that month would be :
Rs. 4250
Rs. 2500
Rs. 2440
Rs. 3000
Let the fixed amount be Rs. x and the cost of each unit be Rs. y. Then, 1080y + x = 4000 ... (i) and 1330y + x = 4500 ... (ii) On subtracting (i) from (ii), we get 250y = 500 <=> y = 2. Putting y = 2 in (i), we get: 1080 x 2 + x = 4000 <=> x = (4000 - 2160) = 1540 Fixed charges = Rs. 1540, Charge per unit = Rs. 2 Total charges for consuming 450 units = Rs. (1540 + 450 x 2) = Rs. 2440
