    If the pipes A, R and M are opened when the tank is full and it takes 30 minutes to empty the tank. And pipes D and N are opened when another tank is full and it takes 1 hour to empty the tank. Find the difference in capacities of the tanks?

    Case I:
    Let the time taken by leak pipe M to empty the tank be x1
    Work done by the three pipes A, R and M to empty the
    tank in a minute = (1/9) – (1/18) – (1/x1)
    It takes 30 minutes to empty the 1st tank
    Thus,
    [(1/9) – (1/18) – (1/x1)] × 30 = -1
    ⇒ 5/3 – 30/x1 = -1
    ⇒ -30/x1 = -8/3
    ⇒ x1 = 90/8 min
    Thus the total capacity of the tank = 90/8 × 15 = 168.75 litres

    Let the time taken by leak pipe N to empty the tank be x2

    Work done by the two pipes D and N to empty the tank
    in a minute = (1/21) – (1/x2)
    It takes 1 hour i.e. 60 minutes to empty the 2nd tank
    Thus,
    [(1/21) – (1/x2)] × 60 = -1
    ⇒ 20/7 – 60/x2 = -1
    ⇒ 60/x2 = 27/7
    ⇒ x2 = 420/27 min
    Thus the total capacity of the tank = 420/27 × 20 = 311.11 litres (Approx)
    ∴ Difference in capacities of tanks = 311.11 - 168.75 = 142.36 litres
