A and B are two stations. A train goes from A to B at 64 km/hr and returns to A at a slower speed. If its average speed for the whole journey is 56 km/hr, at what speed did it return?
48 km/hr
49.77 km/hr
30 km/hr
47.46 km/hr
If the Average of both (two) speeds was 56 km/h,
then the sum of both speeds must equal 56 x 2 = 112km/h because the average equals the sum divided by the number,
eg: (speed1 + speed 2) / 2.
We know one direction the speed was 64 km/h, so 112 - 64 = 48.
The second leg, return speed must be 48 km/hr.
Hence, option 1 is the correct answer.
