Mahatma Gandhi :

In South Africa he witnessed the ugly face of white racism and the humiliation and contempt to which Asians, who had gone to South Africa as labourers, were subjected.
He decided to stay in South Africa to organise the Indian workers to enable them to fi ght for their rights.
To unite different sections of Indians, he set up the Natal Indian Congress and started a paper Indian Opinion.
The TBIA (Transvaal British Indian Association) was formed in approximately 1903 by Mahatma Gandhi to protest against the anti-Indian legislation in the area.
The Phoenix Settlement comprised 100 acres of land and was purchased by Gandhiji in 1904. It was on this Settlement that Gandhi started his journey of transforming from a successful Lawyer to a simple Peasant with a passion for liberation, nonviolence and spirituality.
