Context: Recently, the King of Bhutan, has unveiled plans for a Gelephu smart city project, the Gelephu Special Administrative Region (SAR), spanning 1,000 sq km on its border with Assam.
It aims to serve as an economic bridge between South Asia and Southeast Asia, involving Assam, West Bengal in India, and extending to Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, and Singapore.
The project encompasses a 1,000-square-kilometre area near the Indian border.
Gelephu is positioned as a gateway for Bhutan, aiming to emulate the developmental success of countries like Singapore, South Korea, and the UAE.
Indian government's support includes constructing a railway line to Gelephu.
Proposed rail links: 58 km from Gelephu to Kokrajhar, Assam, and an 18 km link from Bhutan's Samtse to Banarhat, West Bengal.
Enhanced trade facilitation with upgraded customs stations and immigration check posts.
Geopolitical Significance: Strategic initiative for regional integration, enhancing Bhutan’s connectivity with South and Southeast Asia.
Advanced Safety Features: Expected to incorporate advanced safety and environmental features, including a passive decay heat removal system.
Environmental and Cultural Focus: Emphasizes environmental sustainability and cultural sensitivity. Aims to attract ‘quality investment’ from internationally screened companies that align with Bhutanese values. Energy Focus on renewable energy sources, aligning with Bhutan’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
The project will include an international airport, contributing to Bhutan's connectivity.
Plans include a mindfulness city, promoting sustainable businesses inspired by Bhutan's Buddhist heritage.
The King emphasized the project's role in awakening and economic transformation in South Asia.
