Consider the following statement:
1. The Arabian and the Bay of Bengal drainage systems are separated by the Eastern Ghats, the Delhi Ridge, and the Western Ghats.
2. The majority of peninsular rivers flow into the Bay of Bengal from their sources in the Eastern Ghats.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
1 only
2 only
Both 1 and 2
Neither 1 nor 2
Statement 1 is incorrect: The Indian subcontinent is very big in size and fed by different river systems all around the country. The Indian drainage system can be divided into two categories based on water discharge: (i) The Arabian Sea drainage (ii) The Bay of Bengal drainage. The Delhi Ridge, the Aravalis, and the Sahyadris separate them from one another. Majority of the drainage area, which includes the Ganga, Brahmaputra, Mahanadi, Krishna, and other rivers, drains into the Bay of Bengal. The rest of it, which includes the Indus, Narmada, Tapi, Mahi, and Periyar systems, discharge their water into the Arabian Sea. Statement 2 is incorrect: The majority of rivers that flow across the Peninsular Plateau originate in the Western Ghats and empty into the Bay of Bengal, not the Eastern Ghats
