Context: According to Ministry of Electronics and IT India will take over the chair of the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence for 2022-23 at a meeting of the body in Tokyo on November 21.
India will take over the chair of the Global partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) from France.
This development comes on the heels of assuming the Presidency of the G20, a league of the world’s largest economies.
Artificial Intelligence is a Kinetic enabler for growth of India’s Technology ecosystem & a force multiplier for achieving the $1 Trillion Digital Economy goal by 2025.
GPAI was launched in June 2020 and is the fruition of an idea developed within the G7. GPAI is a group of 25 member countries and India joined GPAI in 2020 as a founding member.
Aim: To bridge the gap between theory and practice on AI by supporting cutting-edge research and applied activities on AI-related priorities.
Members: It consists of 25 member countries including India, the US, the UK, European Union, Australia, and Canada among others.
GPAI is a multi-stakeholder initiative which aims to bridge the gap between theory and practice on AI by supporting cutting-edge research and applied activities on AI-related priorities.
GPAI brings together engaged minds and expertise from science, industry, civil society, governments, international organisations and academia to foster international cooperation.
In its first few years, GPAI experts will collaborate across four working groups on the themes of responsible AI (including a subgroup on AI and pandemic response), data governance, the future of work, and innovation and commercialisation.
Artificial Intelligence is expected to add 967 billion US dollars to the Indian economy by 2035.
It is also expected to add 450 to 500 billion US dollars to India’s GDP by 2025 accounting for 10% of the country’s 5 trillion dollar GDP target.
India occupying the chair of GPAI signifies how the world perceives India as a Trusted Technology partner and one that has always advocated for the ethical use of technology for transforming citizens’ lives.
