The scientific name of the Khejri tree is Prosopis Cineraria. In India, it is also known by many other names such as Shami, Khijro, Jhand, Jat, Khar, Kanda, and Jammi depending on the region.
It is called Ghaf in the Middle East region.
Grows in Arid Soil. Can survive a temperature range of 5-50 celcius.
It is in news due to protests by Bishnoi Community of Rajasthan over felling of Khejri Tress for Solar Power Projects in the state. Khejri tress have cultural importance as they are used as fodder, medicine, firewood etc. The fruit is used to make the very popular local dish ‘Sangri’ and can fetch up to Rs 300 per kilo for the farmers.
