    Demography of Uttarakhand

    Demography of Uttarakhand :

    Uttarakhand is located in Northern India and previously was known as Uttaranchal. It is also called the Land of the Gods in perspective of different Hindu temples and famous pilgrimage sites in the state. It is known for its breathtaking wonderfulness of the Himalayas and also the Terai. On 9 November 2000, the state was made using the Himalayan and northwestern areas of Uttar Pradesh. The state is divided into two in the form of Garhwal and Kumaon, with a whole of 13 areas. The capital is Dehradun and it is also the largest city over here.

    The local people of the state are referred to as Uttarakhand and often especially either Garhwali or Kumaoni depending upon their place of origin. As per the census of the year 2011, the state of Uttrakhand had 5,137,773 males and 4,948,519 females. Also, it is ranked 12th in terms of the most populated states.

    Population density and growth of Uttarakhand :

    The population density is about is 189 persons per square kilometer. As demonstrated by the Census 2011, it has a population of 1 Crore, an expansion from 84.89 Lakhs in the 2001 evaluation. The population growth of the state in the present decade was 18.8% and previously it was about 19%.     In Uttarakhand out of total population, 3,872,275 were engaged in work activities. 74.1% of workers describe their work as Main Work (Employment or Earning more than 6 Months) while 25.9% were involved in Marginal activity providing livelihood for less than 6 months. Of 3,872,275 workers engaged in Main Work, 1,045,674 were cultivators (owner or co-owner) while 247,256 were Agricultural labourer.

    As per the Census 2011 out of total population of Uttarakhand, 30.23% people lived in urban regions while 69.77% in rural areas. The total figure of population of urban population was 3,049,338 out of which 1,618,731 were males while remaining 1,430,607 were females. In rural areas of Uttarakhand, male population was 3,519,042 while female population was 3,517,912.

    The average sex ratio in urban regions of Uttarakhand was 884 females per 1000 males. Also the Child (0-6 age) sex ration of urban areas in Uttarakhand was 868 girls per 1000 boys. Thus the total children (0-6 age) living in urban areas of Uttarakhand were 365,038 which is 11.97% of total urban population. Similarly the average sex ratio in rural areas of Uttarakhand was 1,000 females per 1000 males. The Child sex ratio of rural areas in Uttarakhand was 899 girls per 1000 boys.

    The average literacy rate in Uttarakhand for urban regions was 84.45 percent in which males were 89.05% literate while female literacy stood at 79.25%. The total literate population of Uttarakhand was 6,880,953. Similarly in rural areas of Uttarakhand, the average literacy rate was 76.31 percent. Out of which literacy rate of males and females stood at 86.62% and 66.18% respectively. Total literates in rural areas of Uttarakhand were 4,614,050.
