• Population Census is a Union Subject
• The Officer of Registrar General and Census Commissioner, under Ministry of Home Affairs -- conduct of Census
• Literate person- According to Census, a person aged seven years or more than seven years who can read and write with understanding in any language is called a literate person. A person who can merely read but cannot write is not classified as literate.
• Literacy Rate- Total number of literate persons in a given age group, expressed as a percentage of the total population in that age group; The adult literacy rate measures literacy among persons aged 15 years and above, and the youth literacy rate measures literacy among persons aged 15 to 24 years.

• The estimated Global Population in 2010 was 6908.7 million.
• India accounts for 17.5% of total population of World.

Population Growth of India-

• The population of India, at the turn of the 20th century, was only around 238.4 million. This has increased by more than 4 times in a period of 110 years to reach 1210 million in 2011.
• 2001- 2011 is the 1st decade (with the exception of 1911- 1921) which has actually added lesser population compared to the previous decade.

• It is significant that the percentage decadal growth during 2001-2011 has registered the sharpest decline since Independence. It has declined from 23.87% for 1981-91 to 21.54% for the period of 1991-2001, a decrease of 2.33% points.
• For 2001-2011, this decadal growth has become 17.70%, a further decrease of 3.94% points.
• In absolute terms, the population has increased by more than 182 million during the decade 2001- 2011.
• The growth rate of population in India in the last decade is 17.7% (Rural- 1.3% and Urban- 31.8%).

Census 2011-

• The Census 2011 is the 15th National census survey conducted by the Census Organization of India.
• The 2011 Indian National Census has been conducted in 2 phases - house listing and population.
• The national census survey covered all the 28 states of the country and 7 Union territories including 640 districts, 497 cities, 5767 tehsils & over 6 lakh villages.
• Punjab is 15th most populous state of India.

Punjab Working Population - Census 2011

• In Punjab out of total population, 9,897,362 were engaged in work activities. 85.4% of workers describe their work as Main Work (Employment or Earning more than 6 Months) while 14.6% were involved in Marginal activity providing livelihood for less than 6 months.
• Of 9,897,362 workers engaged in Main Work, 1,803,860 were cultivators (owner or co-owner) while 1,168,021 were Agricultural labourers.
