Demographic Profile of the State :
As per the Census 2011, the total Population of Uttarakhand is 1.01 Cr. Thus the population of Uttarakhand forms 0.83 percent of India in 2011. Uttarakhand has total population of 10,086,292 in which males were 5,137,773 while females were 4,948,519.Total area of Uttarakhand is 53,483 square km. Thus the population Density of Uttarakhand is 189 per square km which is lower than national average 382 per square km.
Population :
According 2011 Census of India, Uttarakhand’s population has reached approximately 1.01 Crore with an increase of 19.17 percent from the past decade. Uttarakhand feeds approximately 0.84% of India’s total population. As per census report of Uttarakhand, the total population of the State is 10,116,752; of which male and female are 5,154,178 and 4,962,574, respectively which has increased from 84,89,349, the total population of the state as per Census 2001 where 43,25,924 were males and 41,63,425 were females.
The population of the districts in Uttarakhand varies considerably. Four of the 13 districts, namely Dehradun, Haridwar, Udham Singh Nagar and Nainital account for 61.5 % of the state’s total population. On adding Tehri Garhwal, Pauri Garhwal and Almora, this accounts for nearly 81%. This clearly shows that the concentration of population is quite high in the mid and foothills as compared to the remaining six districts of high hills.
Population Density :
The density of population according to the 2011 census is 189 persons per square kilometre, higher than the 2001 census figure of 150. District-wise, there is enormous variation in the density of population with Haridwar, US Nagar and Dehradun having a high density of 817, 648, and 550 persons per square km respectively; while on the other hand there are districts like Uttarkashi, Chamoli and Pithoragarh the population density is quite low with average of 41, 49, and 69 persons per square km.
Sex Ratio :
With regards to Sex Ratio, the state has demonstrated that it has the better indicators than the national averages. As per Census 2011, Uttarakhand’s Sex Ratio stands out at 963 which was at 962 in 2001 census and fares better as compared to average sex ratio of India (940) but the child sex ratio (886) of Uttrakahnd remains a matter of concern and needs immediate enforcement of PC&PNDT Act in full force along with behaviour change communications to stop female foeticide.
Literacy Rate :
As per preliminary report of Census 2011, Uttarakhand has literacy rate of 79.63% which is above the national average of 74.04%. Total 6,997,433 people were found literate in Uttarakhand during the last Census, out of the total literate population, 3,930,174 were males with a percentage of 88.33 while remaining 3,067,259 were female with 70.70 percent. These averages of literacy in overall and among male and female have increased since Census 2001, where the male and female literacy rates were recorded as 81.02% and 63.36% respectively. Working Population:
In Uttarakhand out of total population, 3,872,275 were engaged in work activities. 74.1% of workers describe their work as Main Work (Employment or Earning more than 6 Months) while 25.9% were involved in Marginal activity providing livelihood for less than 6 months. Of 3,872,275 workers engaged in Main Work, 1,045,674 were cultivators (owner or co-owner) while 247,256 were Agricultural labourer.
Urban/Rural Population :
As per the Census 2011 out of total population of Uttarakhand, 30.23% people lived in urban regions while 69.77% in rural areas. The total figure of population of urban population was 3,049,338 out of which 1,618,731 were males while remaining 1,430,607 were females. In rural areas of Uttarakhand, male population was 3,519,042 while female population was 3,517,912.
Ethnic groups :
Uttarakhand has a multiethnic population spread across two geocultural regions: the Garhwal, and the Kumaon. A large portion of the population is Rajput (various clans of erstwhile landowning rulers and their descendants), including members of the native Garhwali, and Kumaoni as well as a number of immigrants. According to a 2007 study by Centre for the Study of Developing Societies, Uttarakhand has the highest percentage of Brahmins of any state in India, with approximately 20% of the population being Brahmin.18.76% of the population belongs to the Scheduled Castes (an official term for the indigenous aboriginal lower castes in the traditional Caste system in India). Scheduled Tribes such as the Tharu, Jaunsari, Buksa, Bhotiya and Raji constitute 2.89% of the population.
Languages :
Hindi belonging to the Indo-Aryan languages is the official language of Uttarakhand and is spoken by 89.15% of the population (2011 Census of India figure includes Garhwali spoken by 23.03%, Kumaoni spoken by 19.94% and Jaunsari spoken by 1.35% of the population as variants of Hindi). Sanskrit is given the status of second official language. Garhwali and Kumaoni are endangered languages listed by UNESCO. Apart from Hindi, Urdu is the most spoken language with 4.22% speakers followed by Punjabi (2.61%), Bengali (1.50%), Nepali (1.05%) and Maithili (0.54).
Many Tibeto-Burman languages are also spoken in this region, including Jad, Rongpo, Darmiya, Byangsi, Chaudangsi, Raji and Rawat.
Religion :
More than four-fifths of Uttarakhand's residents are Hindus. Muslims, Sikhs, Christians, Buddhists, and Jains make up the remaining population with the Muslims being the largest minority.
The native people of Uttarakhand are generally called Uttarakhandi and sometimes specifically either Garhwali or Kumaoni depending on their place of origin in either the Garhwal or Kumaon region. According to the 2011 Census of India, Uttarakhand has a population of 10,086,292 comprising 5,137,773 males and 4,948,519 females, with 69.77% of the population living in rural areas. The state is the 20th most populous state of the country having 0.83% of the population on 1.63% of the land. The population density of the state is 189 people per square kilometre having a 2001–2011 decadal growth rate of 18.81%. The gender ratio is 963 females per 1000 males.The crude birth rate in the state is 18.6 with the total fertility rate being 2.3. The state has an infant mortality rate of 43, a maternal mortality rate of 188 and a crude death rate of 6.6.
