Hurda Confrence :
The land of Rajasthan has witnessed very few moments when its warriors united on a common issue shading all the differences. One such occasion was the battle of Khanwa when all the kings fought in unison against the mighty Mughal Babar. May be it was the charismatic leadership provided by Maharana Sangram Singh. But the bitter truth is that after Sangram Singh the threads of unity shattered. The death of Aurangzeb coincided with the rise of Maratha power. The Maratha power reached its zenith under the leadership of Peshwas. They used to collect Chauth and Sardeshmukhi as tax or tribute. In the first half of eighteneeth century their interference in the politics of Rajasthan reached disturbing levels. They started plundering territories of Rajasthan inflicting defeats on various rulers. Even kingdoms of high stature like Mewar were humbled by the Marathas. At this time Sawai Jai Singh of Jaipur tried to unite all Rajput rulers under one umbrella by convening Hurda Conference. It was attended by almost all Rajput kings.
Hurada is the name of a place in Bhilwara. Where was a conference called on 17 July 1734. The objective of convening this conference is to curb the Maratha power and to create a strategy to stop the continuous Maratha invasions on the Rajputana. Jagatsingh II was the President of Hurada Conference. These rulers of Sawai Jai Singh, Zorar Singh, Durgasanal, Abhay Singh, Bakhsingh, Dalisinh, Gopal Das and Raj Singh Rajputana were joined in this conference.
In the Hurah conference, all the rulers decided with a consensus that all the rulers would be the companions of each other during this struggle. No one will give shelter to each other's enemies. After the rainy season campaign against the Marathas will be done. In which all the rulers will send troops under the leadership of themselves or their Yuvraj. And it will also be an attempt to get help from the Mughal emperor.
The Hurura conference was a symbol of the desire to work by being organized by the Rajput states against the Marathas. But unfortunately the decisions of the Hurghada Conference could not be implemented. When the Marathas came to know of the scheme made against them by Rajput rulers, they increased the interference in Rajsthya princely states after assuming the ownership of Rajput kingdoms as a threat to themselves in the future .
Between 1736 and 1738, most of the states of Rajasthan accepted the Chauth for the Marathas. It started with the arrival of Peshwa in Udaipur in January 1736 , when Maharana gave assurance of giving Rs 1.5 lakh per year to Peshwa Bajirao I. After this, the states like Jaipur, Marwar, Nagaur, Kota accepted Chauth that will be given to Marathas.
The result of Hurada Confrence :
Although the effort was not successful it is remembered as an important episode in the history of Rajasthan.
