To encourage sports activities in Himachal and build up sportsman’s spirit in every individual of the state , the government keeps organising camps and tournaments from time to time. Sportsmen and sportswomen are given special attention, incentives and recognition so that their interest in sports never fades away and they keep making the state and country proud by performing brilliantly.
1. Sports are given a special importance in Himachal Pradesh. Himachal is a state that believes in all round development of an individual. To fulfill this objective many tournaments and camps are organised at the state and even national level in Himachal. Sports persons are given a great deal of attention so that they are inspired to focus on sports.
2. On the occasion of Olympics day celebrated on 23rd June, an inter- state program was organised in Kangra.
3. To encourage sports in H.P. 7. Incentives to Sportspersons :
Dept. was created during 1982-83 with an objective of involving youth in the task of National re-construction and to harness their energy towards eradication of social evils. About 40% of the population consists of youth who need ample opportunity for self-expression, self-development and cultural attainment enabling them to assume social and civic responsibility. To become socially useful, functionally effective and economically well being, the Department is providing requisite institution and infrastructural facilities to these youth in its various programs. The main aim/of the Department is to make the youth a powerful instrument in effecting social, cultural and economic changes and to channelize their energies, idealism and aspirations towards building up a strong and modern India.
8. Push to Water Sports : Inject more adventure into life and learn to paddle some of Himachal’s most beautiful rivers. Starting on shore and in calm waters, paddlers learn kayaking strokes and river safety. With the appropriate skills and confidence, participants move on to navigate and play in white water. From throw bag rescue to surfing and learning to swim through rapids, tourists definitely enjoy a wet and wild course! "The river delights to lift us free if only we dare to let go."
9. Aero Sports Potential : Paragliding over India is a great way to escape crowds and appreciate the scenery from another angle all together.Manali is a great spot for paragliding, offering huge thermals. Paragliding has taken off big time in the Manali area, although it's still relatively new so local knowledge and infrastructure is limited. However, a couple of operators in town offer short tandem rides for novices. Solang Nullah is once again the main venue, and the paragliding season runs from May to October although the months before and after the monsoon (MayJune and SeptemberOctober) offer the safest flying times. High summer flying is only for extremists, as monster winds produce difficult conditions. South of Manali at the junction of the Kulu and Parvati valleys is Bizli Mehedev, another top spot for catching the massive thermals. International Paraglyding cup in Kangra shows the potential of Himachal landscape in these games.
Organisational Setup to promote sports activities :
The Department of Youth Services and Sports :
Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports,Manali :

The State of Himachal Pradesh may not have contributed much in the overall scenario of games and sports in the country internationally but over the last few years many of its sports persons have given outstanding performances in the field of sports. Sports-persons of this State have also won Padamshree and Arjuna Awards and a few have excelled themselves individually in various team games.
