Saline or Salt water lakes of Rajasthan :
Rajasthan is known for its magnificent forts and palaces and of course the desert area however, there are numerous beautiful and picturesque lakes as well in Rajasthan. Some of the lakes are a gift of nature to Rajasthan, while others have been carved out in the earth's surface by the efforts of man to be the source of the drinking water for the civilization and were used as a reservoir to conserve rainwater.
The Saline or Salt water lakes generally found in the north-western desert of Rajasthan. This region is considered a part of Tethis Sea. Due to this, the lakes in this region are saline. The major saline or salt lakes of Rajasthan are as follows –
Sambhar Lake :
The Sambhar Salt Lake, India’s largest inland salt lake, is located 96 km southwest of the city of Jaipur (Northwest India). The lake is on the border of Jaipur and Nagaur district of Rajasthan, while it also touches the Ajmer district Rivers Mantha, Rupangarh, Khari, Khandela drain their water into this lake. The length of this lake from south-east to north-west is appx 32KM while the width varies from 3km to 12 km. The lake produces 8.7% of Salt produced in India.The drainage area of Sambhar lake is surrounded by Kantali River Basin from north, Bandi River flow from east, Mansi River Basin from south and Luni River Basin from west. This Lake is managed by Sambhar Salts Limited, a joint venture of Hindustan Salts and the Government of Rajasthan.
Didwana Lake :
The Didwana Lake, a natural lake, is located at Nagaur district of Rajasthan. It is 4km long and 2km broad. The Production of salt produced is non-edible grade because of high fluoride. Depression is surrounded by sand dunes/Hills but in west surrounded by isolated spur of the Aravalli. Bed of the depression shows the presence of block clay.
Pachpadra Lake :
The Pachpadra Lake, a Natural Lake, is a salt lake near Pachpadra in Barmer District, Rajasthan, India. Its sodium chloride level is marked at 98%. The total area of this Lake is 25 Sq. km. Pachpadra Lake is one of the major tourist’s attractions in Rajasthan near Barmer District. Pachpadra Lake travel and tourism provides a great opportunity to visit the beautiful lake with the best of facilities.
Lunkaransar Lake :
The Lunkaransar Lake, a Natural Lake, is a salt lake near Lunkaransar town in Bikaner District, Rajasthan, India. Lunkaransar is a small, closed, dry basin surrounded by dunes at the northeastern margin of the Thar Desert The lake levels were very shallow and ?uctuated often in the early Holocene and then rose abruptly around 6300 carbon-14 years before the present (14 C yr B.P.). The major Harrapan-Indus civilization began and ?ourished in this region 1000 years after desiccation of the lake during arid climate and was not synchronous with the lacustral phase.
Other Lakes :
The other lakes are Falaudi (in Falaudi town of Jodhpur district), Degana (Nagaur district), Kavod (Jesalmer district), Kuchaman (Nagaur district), Talachhapar (Churu district), Kachhor and Revas (Sikar) etc.
