Current Issues in Himachal Pradesh :
People in all parts of the world face problems , be it Political, Social, Civil, Natural or economical. Himachal Pradesh is no exception and Being a hilly state with varying terrains and climate, it faces many natural , environmental and commercial problems most of them are either human created or out of ignorance. However, the People of Himachal Pradesh have met various problems in this era of commercialisation and are gradually dealing with it.
Environmental change :
Even though Being a pollution and Industrial waste free state, HP is experiencing a climatic as well as environmental change affecting its flora and fauna. Air clean in HP hill stations, but pollution high in industrial towns which chaging overall temperature.
Traffic congestion :
Gone are the days when people used to consider traffic jam a matter in Metro cities but nearly every city, town and local Markets in the state are facing serious traffic jams , sometimes lasting hours. The tourist inflow is increasing while roads are still at the same capacity.
Remoteness :
People in the districts of Lahaul and Spiti remain isolated from rest of the world in winters. Rohtang tunnel after 16 years of its laid down work has yet not completed so as to ease the Lahaul Valley people from traveling across the Rohtang Pass. As the 13000ft High Rohtang pass is covered with snow , remains blocked for rest of the winters.
Road accidents :
Previously when the roads were not that broad and perfectly paved , the accident toll was lower than the current highly maintained and neat roads. Many people loose their lives in road accidents due to lack of 4 lane network in core regions.
Soil infertility :
The formation of Dams for Hydroelectricity has provided the state with 100% electrification achievement and enhanced irrigation system in nearby areas but most importantly it rendered the average span of flowing river such that the inner tributries of immediate ones did not survive and diminished quickly
Mining is done on most of the rivers to cater the need of sand and stone for ever expanding network of Buildings and new constructions within the state. The areas surrounding these rivers suffer due to soil infertility and only seasonal crops can be cultivated here.
Water bodies pollution :
Rivers have been facing serious danger due to Illegal/ Permissive Mining, Open Dafecation by Immigrants and Tourists, littering, Washing Vehicles and clothings.
An example from a religious place of interest “Shahtalai” situated on the border of Bilaspur and Hamirpur districts, receiving hundreds of pilgrims daily and the figure rises to as higher as thousands in peak festive seasons. This place does not have enough capacity to accommodate such mass of tourists and most of people either stay in Sarai (Cheaper Accommodation) or Government operated Large Dormetories available in Deotsidh ( Main Place of Holy Cave) and Nearby Gurudwaras.
Local residents should try to raise the Issues to the Concerned Authorities and soon will be building a Foundation which could raise fund and Help spreading awareness and run cleaning Campaigns.
Drug Menance :
The easy availability of drugs in Kangra and Mandi area is shocking. The menace has already reached schools. Surely the source is Punjab on one side and Malana on the other. The police is either indifferent or in some cases actively in cohoots with peddlers. After Punjab it is the turn of Himachali youngsters to be hooked to drugs. Even the earlier CM had accepted this fact. Unfortunately not much has been done.
Inspite of all problems govt. is also working hard to improve the overall situation of state.
