The 22nd All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) will be established in Haryana.

Facts :

• The announcement was made regarding this at the Interim Budget 2019. An area of over 220 acres has been identified for this purpose.
• The AIIMS would be established at Manethi village in Haryana’s Rewari district.
• The establishment of the premier in the state will provide an opportunity for the youth of Haryana to undergo both undergraduate and post graduate medical education in all its branches.
• Setting up of the AIIMS will not only help the people of South Haryana but also those staying in Rajasthan along the Haryana border.
• It is also expected to generate several thousand jobs in the region, he said, adding: “Not just healthcare, it would be a catalyst for the all-round development of the region which is considered to be backward.”
• The President of India Shri Ram Nath Kovind in a joint session of Parliament of 16th Lok Sabha in 2014, had announced setting up of AIIMS in each State following which then Union Health and Family Welfare Minister had written to Chief Ministers of 15 States, including Haryana, to identify land for the institutes.
• Another important Government of India project, the National Cancer Institute at Badsa district Jhajjar, the first institute in northern India to have proton facility for treatment of cancer, is likely to be fully functional by February or March 2019.

All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) :

• All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) is the autonomous institutions set up under the act of parliament.
• The All India Institute Of Medical Sciences Act, 1956 provides for the establishment of AIIMS  as Institute of National Importance.
• The parent institute of AIIMS is established in Delhi. It came into existence in the year 1956.
• Currently, there are a total of seven AIIMS in the country. It is present in Delhi, Bhopal, Bhubaneshwar, Jodhpur, Patna, Raipur, and Rishikesh.
• The government is establishing the other 14 AIIMS since 2014 in Gorakhpur, Nagpur, Mangalgiri, Kalyani, Bihar Sahrasa, Bhatinda, Madurai, Bilaspur, Devgadh, Kamrup, Gujarat, and Jammu and Kashmir. Now, the AIIMS in Haryana will be the 22nd AIIMS.

Objectives of AIIMS :

• To develop a pattern of teaching in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education in all its branches so as to demonstrate a high standard of medical education to all medical colleges and other allied institutions in India.
• To bring together in one place educational facilities of the highest order for the training of the personnel in all important branches of the health activity.
• To attain self-sufficiency in postgraduate medical education.

AIIMS Institutions aims to develop patterns of teaching in Undergraduate and Post-graduate Medical Education in all its branches so as to demonstrate a high standard of Medical Education in India and to bring together in one place educational facilities of the highest order for the training of personnel in all important branches of health activity; and to attain self-sufficiency in Post-graduate Medical Education.
