While the transition of successful sportspersons into politics in the country is not new, Krishna Punia, once country’s top athlete, Commonwealth 2010 gold medalist and Olympian, has joined the club by winning a seat for the Congress in Rajasthan. A native of Hisar district in Haryana and married in adjoining Churu district of Rajasthan, Krishan has won the assembly election from Sadulpur with a margin of around 18,000 votes. The 36-year-old athlete defeated BJP stalwart Ram Singh Kaswan, who remained a member of parliament from Churu for four terms. Kaswan has finished third. Kaswan’s son Rahul is presently representing the Churu parliamentary constituency in Lok Sabha
