Considered as one of the most formidable forts during the reign of the Maratha Empire, the history of Fort Shivneri goes back to at least 1st Century CE. Located at the height of 3,400 feet, it may have been built by the Shaka king Naahapan, whose capital was located at Junnar. After the defeat of Naahapan, the region and the Fort may have gone to the Satavahanas. It was later under the dominion of the Yadavas of Devagiri.
