At the onset of the monsoons in Assam, the doors of the Kamakhya Temple are closed in observance of the Ambubachi Mela , for about four days. The fair marks the annual menstruation of the goddess at Kamakhya. The temple doors are shut so she can peacefully “go through her period”. On the fifth day, the temple’s doors are opened once more for visitors.
