First shelter home for stray cattle and Kanha Pashu Ashray Yojana

Uttar Pradesh urban development minister Suresh Khanna inaugurated the state’s first shelter home for stray cattle in Bareilly city on Friday. Built on 2.8 hectares of land at Kharaula in Parsakhera area, the shelter home has been developed by a private agency hired by Bareilly Municipal Corporation. The project has been developed at a cost of around Rs 4.5 crore under the state government’s ‘Kanha Pashu Ashray Yojana’. Agra is also planning to open a shelter home to house 5,000 stray animals at Naraich in Trans Yamuna locality.
The shelter home for stray cattle (Kanha Upvan Pashu Ashray Grih) is Uttar Pradesh’s first shelter home developed in Bareilly to give refuge to stray cattle. The shelter home has been developed in Parsakhera under BMC’s Nadausi ward number 37. It will accommodate around 1,000-1,500 stray cattle. At the shelter home, BMC has developed a pond spread over 1,500 sq m and a system of rain water harvesting has also been installed.
To protect the animals during bad weather, sheds have also been set up and four rooms have been built to store cattle fodder. A fodder-cutting machine has also been installed. Besides, some painting work on walls of the shelter home has been done while around 200 trees have also been planted inside the compound.
Officials at BMC said that though the shelter home has been specifically developed for stray cattle, a portion of it has been developed for sterilisation of stray dogs which includes an operation theatre and a small kitchen. Stray dogs that are brought for sterilisation will also be provided with food.
BMC has roped in a few NGOs which have been assigned the responsibility to look after the shelter home and the stray animals there, while a few BMC workers are also likely to be deputed to oversee the running of the shelter.
