The move, touted as the country's first universal old age pension scheme, raised eyebrows as the pension amount was considered less at Rs 250 a month.
This scheme will provide additional coverage to the existing Central government pension scheme, the Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension Scheme (IGNOAPS), which covers Indians who are 60 years and above and live below the poverty line. All IGNOAPS beneficiaries aged between 60 and 79 receive a monthly pension of Rs 300 and those 80 years and above receive a monthly pension amount of Rs 500.
