Hukumchand Jain was born in Hansi (dt. Hissar, Haryana) in the year 1816. His father Dunichand was a businessman and had great influence in governmental circles. Hukumchand had studied several subjects in childhood. He became equally well-versed in Farsi, Urdu and Mathematics. He was in a high post in the court of Bahadur Shah. In 1841 he was appointed the kanungo in the Hansi region. His systematic work and popular deeds brought him reputation both in the public and governmental circles.
The situation due to the sepoy rebellion in Meerut had turned critical. The rebel soldiers, after killing many and ousting all the Firangis from Meerut Chawani advanced onto Delhi and fraternized with the native soldiers of Delhi who also rose in revolt seeing their compatriots from Meerut coming to seize Delhi. On 11th May 1857 the last Mughal Emperor Bahadur Shah, a pensioner of the East India Company till then, was chosen unanimously by all the rebels as the Head of the rebellion, was proclaimed the Emperor of Hindustan and a 21 gun salute was offered in his honour. At that time Hukumchand Jain was in the durbar and was actively attending to several jobs in connection with it. He was entrusted with the responsibility of leading the revolt at Hansi and fighting the British on that front. Mirza Myner Baig was the colleague in that mission. The two patriots now totally immersed themselves in the work of organizing the revolt in the Hansi region. In addition to that they recruited soldiers afresh and sent arms, ammunition and man-power to Delhi.
