Haryana's Jhajjar to have Central Research Institute for Yoga

The Governing Body of Central Council for Research in Yoga and Naturopathy (CCRYN), working under the Ministry of AYUSH as the apex body for Research and Education in the field of Yoga and Naturopathy has decided to establish six Research Institutes in the country.

Facts :

  • Jhajjar district of Haryana will have one of the six Central Research Institutes of Naturopathy and Yoga, approved by Central Council for Research in Yoga and Naturopathy, to be set up in the country.
  • The institute would be set up at village Devarkhana in district Jhajjar, Bahadurgarh at a cost of Rs 57.04 crore and it would have a 200-bed hospital. Also, a 50-bed chest specialist hospital would be set up in the area of Matanhail in district Jhajjar.
  • First phase of construction work on 10 acres of cost free land provided by Govt. of Haryana has been completed. The construction work of 2nd phase of CRI (now PGIYNER) has been assigned to M/s NPCC and construction work has already commenced.
  • A sum of Rs 57 crore has been approved for the institute, of which construction worth about Rs 34 crore has so far been completed and it would be functional within one-and-a-half years.
  • The Chairman of the Board of Ayurvedic and Unani System of Medicine, Dr Sanjay Atri said that the patients were being given medicines free of cost at the camp and it would also make them aware of the Ayurvedic system of medicine.
  • 522 dispensaries of AYUSH were functioning in all districts of Haryana. AYUSH hospitals have been opened at Ambala, Panchkula, Jind, Gurgaon and Hisar. Also, 91 AYUSH poly-clinics were functioning in the State.
  • Further, the Governing Body of CCRYN has decided to establish Post Graduate Institutes for Research in Yoga and Naturopathy at Nagmangla (Karnataka) with a total cost of 59.67 crore.

Analysis :

  • Present government wishes to promote Yoga as an alternative health care system in a big way after having successfully celebrated the first ever International Yoga Day recently.
  • Moreover, AYUSH has also set up the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga in New Delhi.
  • According to the official sources, 108 colleges from 54 universities had been conducting courses on Yoga at various levels in the country during 2016-17.
  • CBSE has already included Yoga as one of the subjects along with physical and health education. Similarly, the UGC has included Yoga in the modules on the health, nutrition, fitness and general well being in all courses at under graduate and post graduate levels.

Central Council for Research in Yoga & Naturopathy (CCRYN) :

 

  • The Government of India after having recognized the need of systematic research for development of Indian Systems of Medicine including Homoeopathy in the Country, established the Central Council for Research in Indian Medicine and Homoeopathy in 1969 as an autonomous body under the Ministry of Health & family welfare, Govt. of India which continued to conduct scientific research in Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy upto 1978.
  • During all this period Naturopathy was looked after by the Ministry of Health & family Welfare directly. Thereafter, in March 1978, this composite Council was dissolved to pave way for the formation of independent Research Councils i.e. one each for Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy.
  • The Central Council for Research in Yoga & Naturopathy was established as Registered Society on 30th March, 1978 with the Union Minister of Health & Family Welfare as President of Governing Body.
  • It is functioning as an autonomous organization under the newly created Ministry of AYUSH, Govt. of India and fully funded by the Ministry for all its activities. Since inception, the Council is involved in various activities related to the development of these systems in terms of Research, Education, Training and Propagation.
