Punjab is a state in northern India. Forming part of the larger Punjab region, the state is bordered by the Indian states of Jammu and Kashmir to the north, Himachal Pradesh to the east, Haryana to the south and southeast, Rajasthan to the southwest, and the Pakistani province of Punjab to the west. Between 1951 and 2011, population density of Punjab grew substantially from 182 to 550 people per square kilometer of land area rising at an increasing annual rate that reached a maximum of 23.79 % in 1981 and then decreased to 13.64 % in 2011.
