Asam Sahitya Sabha, the oldest literary-cultural organization of Assam, was constituted for the development of Assamese language, literature and culture in 1917. The organisation evolved from two earlier Kolkata-based bodies— ‘Asamiya Bhasa Unnati Sadhini Sabha’ and ‘Assamese Literary Society’— which were established by the Assamese students. Eminent writers Padmanath Gohain Barua and Sarat Chandra Goswami became the first president and the first secretary respectively. With its central office in Jorhat, there are nine other regional offices of Asam Sahitya Sabha situated in different places of Assam including Guwahati. There are 32 affiliated district units of Asam Sahitya Sabha and over 1,000 branches. The Sabha has seven branches outside the state, such as, in Kohima, Aizwal, Shillong, Pasighat, Kameng, New Delhi, Mumbai, and three abroad, i.e., London, North America and Singapore.
