According to the seismic hazard map of India, Bihar is located in seismic zones III, IV and V, Zone V has districts like Araria, Madhubani, Sitamarhi, Supaul and Darbhanga. South-western districts such as Aurangabad, Bhojpur, Rohtas, Nawada, Kaimur, Gaya and Jehanabad are located in Zone III. The remaining parts of Bihar, including Patna, lie in zone four. Earthquakes have been seen to have devastating effects on the lives of millions of people in the state. More than 10,000 people lost their lives in the 1934 earthquake, followed by earthquakes in 1988 and 2011, and the most recent 2016 earthquake measured 6.8 on the Richter scale.
