• Traditional ‘Mukhota’ dance was the centre of attraction during the snow fest at Goshal in tribal Lahaul-Spiti district.
• Technical Education Minister Ram Lal Markanda, who was the chief guest, also participated in the folk dance.
• A tug of war and ‘cholo’ and knitting competitions were organised.
• Markanda said after the opening of the Atal Tunnel, tourism in the valley had received a boost. He exhorted the local people to take advantage of a home stay scheme to further boost tourism.
• He said residents could also develop other avenues for tourism purpose. He said they were expecting a huge influx of tourists during summer, and for these adequate arrangements were being made.

Mukhota Dance:

• Mukhota dance is performed by Lamas in Mutts of Lahaul-Spiti and Kinnaur.
• The people of Kinnaur perform this dance to repel the evil spirits.
• The masks are mainly made up of wood. On its head and chin, hair of local animals is used. Masks are of various colours and they are decorated with colourful stones and gems.
• These masks are usually stored in temples and Lamas take them out on special festivals and occasions.
• Some of the famous Mukhota or Mask Dances are: Lama Dance, Chhamm Dance, Temoswang Dance, etc.
