Kabar Lake or Kavar Lake, also known locally as Kabar Tal, Kanwar Tal or Kavar Tal, is a freshwater lake in Begusarai district of Bihar. This lake and the surrounding wetland has the status of a bird sanctuary. According to the statistics of the Forest Department of the Government of Bihar, it was given the status of bird sanctuary in 1989 and it has been spread over a total area of 63.11 square kilometers. There are a lot of migratory birds in the winter including foreign birds. The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands was signed on 2 February 1971 in Ramsar, a city on the banks of the Capsian Sea in Iran. Hence it is called Ramsar Sandhi. Some people refer to this treaty as the Wetland Convention. It came into force in 1975. It is an inter-governmental treaty that provides guidance regarding the conservation and proper use of wetlands. India signed the treaty in 1982. There were 26 Ramsar areas before 2019, taking the Sundar Forest Delta (West Bengal) in 2019 to 27, and this year (2020) added 10 more areas to the Ramsar region in India. The number increased to 37, recently one Uttarakhand and one Bihar area has been added to the Ramsar area, making it 39.
