The Punjab Government will take the issue of declaring Shaheed Kartar Singh Sarabha as ‘National Martyr’ with the Central Government soon.

• The announcement was made by Cabinet Minister Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria after paying tributes to the martyr during a state-level martyrdom function held at Sarabha village.
• Sarkaria announced a grant of Rs.5 lakh from his discretionary funds for the sports club of the village.
• “While our government is committed to promote the ideas of our great martyrs, CM Capt Amarinder Singh has already decided to develop and restore all places related to the martyrs,” said Sarkaria claiming that during the Independence Day celebrations at Ludhiana two years ago the chief minister had announced a grant of Rs1.25 cr for the development of Sarabha village.
• The martyrdom day was also observed by the Ludhiana Unit of Communist Party of India.

About Kartar Singh Sarabha

• Kartar Singh Sarabha was an Indian revolutionary who was the most famous and reputed martyrs of Punjab and India.
• Kartar Singh Sarabha was born in Sarabha village in Ludhiana, Punjab.
• He was 15 years old when he became a member of Ghadar Party, then he came up as a leading luminary member and started fighting for the independence movement.
• When the Ghadar party was founded in mid-1913 with Sohan Singh, a Sikh peasant from Bhakna village in Amritsar district, as president and Lala Hardyal as secretary, Kartar Singh stopped his university work, moved in with Lala Hardyal and became his helpmate in running the revolutionary newspaper Ghadar (revolt). He undertook the responsibility for printing of the Gurmukhi edition of the paper. He composed patriotic poetry for it and wrote articles.
• In November 1915 at Lahore, Kartar Singh Sarabha was executed for his role in the movement when he was 19 years old.
