Punjab CM thanks Gadkari for okaying Baba Nanak road project
Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh today thanked Union Minister of Road Transport & Highways Nitin Gadkari for accepting the state government’s proposal to approve the 72-km stretch of Beas-Mehta-Batala-Dera Baba Nanak road project under ‘Bharatmala Pariyojana’ Phase-I.
He said the upgradation of the road project as four-lane would go a long way in giving impetus to the overall development of the region and giving infrastructural boost to the industrial town of Batala.
The approval of the project, the long-pending demand of the border area residents, and especially the Sikh sangat, had been fulfilled. It would enable them to pay obeisance at Sri Kartarpur Sahib Gurdwara in a hassle-free manner.
What is Bharatmala?
It is an umbrella project under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. The Public Investment Board has cleared the proposal for Bharatmala Pariyojana Phase-I. Under the plan the government intends to develop 83,677 km of highways and roads at an investment of around Rs 7 lakh crore over the next five years. In the first phase, the plan is to construct 34,800 km of highways at a cost of Rs 5.35 lakh crore. It focuses on the new initiatives like development of Border and International connectivity roads, Coastal & port connectivity roads, improving efficiency of National Corridors, Economic corridors and others.
