West Bengal celebrated the ‘Rosogolla Dibas’ or Rasgulla Day on 14 November 2019 to mark the granting of the Geographical Indication (GI) tag of ‘Banglar Rosogolla’ or Bengal’s Rasgulla to the state on this day two years ago (14 November 2017).
Rosogolla Dibas celebrations
The statue of Nobin Chandra Das, inventor of the Bengal variant of the sweetmeat, was garlanded across the state.
For the first time in the history of West Bengal’s sweetmeat industry, almost all sweet shops in state are dedicated this day to Rosogolla.
At state government’s ‘Misti Hub’ in the northeastern fringes of Kolkata city, new varieties of Rosogollas have been displayed at outlets of popular sweetmeat brands. The hub is run by West Bengal Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (HIDCO).
The reason behind Celebrations:
For years, West Bengal and Odisha were involved in a tug-of-war to stake a claim to the origin of the sweetmeat. Thereby, while West Bengal was granted GI tag for ‘Banglar Rosogulla’ or the Bengal variant of the sweetmeat in 2017, Odisha got the GI tag for ‘Odisha Rasagola’ or the Odisha variant earlier in 2019. A Geographical Indication (GI) tag identifies a product as originating from a particular region.
