To minimise losses due to floods, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Ropar, has carried out mapping of some districts in Punjab that witnessed huge losses due to floods in August 2019.
The researchers have carried out the study by using the microwave remote sensing (MRS) technique through Sentinel-1 satellite of the European Space Agency (ESA). The data for the mapping of the districts especially Ropar, were collected from the ESA.
In August last year, Punjab witnessed floods in Kapurthala, Ropar, Fazilka, Moga and Ludhiana districts. following excess water released from the Bhakra Dam on the Satluj.
The researchers suggested setting up of reservoirs where the excess water could be collected. They also suggested that the low-lying areas need to be relocated and no more settlement of the population should be allowed in these flood-prone or low-lying areas, where excessive water during floods used to enter first.
