The Punjab cabinet has approved setting up seven fast track courts to adjudicate rape cases within two months. It has also decided to set up three special courts for trying offences under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences' (POCSO) Act. A total of 115 new posts, including judges and support staff, will be created for these courts.
The POCSO Act, 2012 is a comprehensive law to provide for the protection of children from the offences of sexual assault, sexual harassment and pornography, while safeguarding them interests of the child at every stage of the judicial process by incorporating child-friendly mechanisms for reporting, recording of evidence, investigation and speedy trial of offences through designated Special Courts.
