Historical Places in Uttarakhand :
Due to the vast number of historical places in Uttarakhand, it is also referred to as Dev Bhoomi or the Land of Gods. The state has been ruled by the Kushanas, Kudinas, Kanishka, Samudra, Guptas, Pauravas, Katuris, Palas, Chandras, Pawaras and the British. After Independence, the Tehri princely state was merged into Uttar Pradesh state, while Uttarakhand composed the Garhwal and Kumaon Divisions. The term Uttaranchal came into use when the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) initiated a new round of state reorganisation in 1998 and introduced its preferred name.
Dwarahat, Ranikhet :
An ancient historical place in Uttarakhand full of beautiful temples and breathtaking sceneries, Dwarahat is a wonderful retreat in the Kumaon Mountains. Situated in the wondrous Almora district of Uttarakhand, Dwarahat is a place of special inheritance and of religious importance. Home to some 55 odd ancient temples built in the medieval ages by the Katyuri Kings, Dwarahat is the representative of the regions great past and its architectural prowess.
Katarmal Sun Temple, Almora :
Being the second most important Sun temple, this 800-year-old temple has one main temple and 45 smaller shrines. The main deity of the Sun temple in Katarmal is called Burhadita or Vraddhaditya (the old Sun God). The idols of Shiva-Parvati and Lakshmi-Narayana are also found in this temple. Presently, much of the temple stands in beautiful ruins reminiscent of the bygone era of glory.
Narendarnagar, Tehri Garhwal :
Located in the proximity of Tehri Garhwal, Narendranagar is a tourist attraction where one can enjoy the beautiful sights of River Ganga and Doon valley. Located 16 kms from Rishikesh on Gangotri and Yamunotri route.
Lohaghat, Abbott Mount :
Lohaghat is a beautiful hill station located in the Champawat district in the state of Uttarakhand. This ancient town is an important place for temples and is flocked by tourists due to its historical and mythological significance. This sleepy little town is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The serene climate, pine and oak trees and verdant greenery are what beckons people to this exquisite location.
Kanda, Bageshwar :
Situated at the confluence of three rivers, namely, Saryu, Gomti and latent Bhagirathi, lies the holy township of Bageshwar, which is also revered to as the pious land associated with Lord Sadashiva, said to be the redeemer of all sins. If we were to believe the Puranas, this undoubtedly is a historical place in Uttarakhand capable of liberating one from the eternal bondage of births & deaths. With the east and west sides of the town being flanked by the Bhileswar and Nileshwar mountains, and surrounded by the Suraj Kund in the north and the Agni Kund in the south, this land of Lord Shankar is of great religious, historic and political significance.
Pithorgarh Fort, Pithorgarh :
Pithoragarh Fort is one of the most sought after historical places in Uttarakhand. Located in the proximity to the place, this fort affords spectacular views of the Kali Kumaon. As per the records, this fort was established in the year 1789 by Gorkhas after the invasion of town.
Clock Tower, Dehradun :
Clock tower, also known as "ghanta ghar" is a very famous tourist attraction. It was started in the year 1948 and got completed in 1953. The much-respected Lal Bahadur Shastri inaugurated the monument. It is a renowned historical place in Uttarakhand and was built by the British before India got its independence. The clock does not tick at present, but it is said that years ago when it was built, the peak of it was such that a person on the other end of the city could hear it as well.
Piran Kaliyar Sharif, Rishikesh :
The resting place of the Sufi saint Alauddin Ali Ahmed Sabir, Piran Kaliyar Sharif is a famous dargah located in Kaliyari village near Haridwar. It is a historical place in Uttarakhand of great spiritual energy as well religious unity with both Hindu and Muslims being ardent visitors to the dargah. It is one of the most important Muslim shrines in the India and is equally cherished by the Hindu populace of the region.
Governor’s House, Nainital :
Home to the popular golf course, the Governor's House is a Victorian Gothic edifice built in 1899 by designer F.W. Steven. It resembles the Castle of Scotland very closely and consists of two stories of buildings with 113 rooms, garden, swimming pool and of course, the golf course. During British times, it served as the summer residence of the Governor of North East Province.
