Museums in Uttarakhand :
The state of Uttarakhand is located in the northern part of India, more specifically, in the Himalayas. This state is divided into two parts namely, Garhwal and Kumaon and has a total of 13 districts. This state, also called the "Land of the Gods" or Devbhumi has some of the holiest Hindu shrines, major rivers like Gangotri and Yamunotri, many ancient temples, nationally protected monuments, forest reserves, national parks, hill stations and mountain peaks. They have not only beautified this state but have also made Uttarakhand one of the famous tourist destinations of India. Museums of Uttarakhand are no exception in this regard. They have also added value to the tourism of this state. These museums will familiarize it’s visitors with the past as well as cultural heritage of the state. They serve as ideal places for historical buffs. Dehradun, the capital city of Uttarakhand has a museum called the Subir Raha Oil Museum. Nainital, a popular hill station in Uttarakhand serves as a home to the Corbett Museum. Folk Culture Museum is situated in Bhimtal, is a town and a nagar panchayat in Nainital district. The Survey Museum, Geology and Geophysics Museum and Roorkee Group Museum and Archivesadd beauty to a place called Roorkee, which is a city in Haridwar district. K Dev Bhoomi Wax Museum is a museum located in Mussoorie, a hill station and a municipal board in the Dehradun District. Almora houses the Regiment Museum, Gobind Vallabh Pant Museum, Archaeological Museum and Kumaon Regimental Centre Museum.
Survey Museum, Roorke :
Survey Museum of Roorke is located inside the campus of University of Roorkee.The museum is maintained by Department of Civil Engineering of that University. The museum was established in the year 1950 mainly for the Engineering students. The museum houses old surveying elements of 19th century and modern surveying and mapping equipments.
Garhwali Museum, Lansdowne:
The Garhwali Museum is located at The Garhwal Rifles Regimental Center, Lansdowne. The museum was set up in 1987 to preserve the elements used by the Garhwal Regiment. The museums exhibits Battle scenes of Pre-Independence and Post Independence periods, portraits of the brave soldiers, achievements, customs, traditions, rich certificates and documents of world war I and II, war trophies, antiques, old dresses, medals, appreciation.
Govind Ballabh Pant Government Museum, Almora :
Govind Ballabh Pant Government Museum is situated at Central Lodge in Almora.It was established in the year 1980. The museum is multi purpose in nature. It has an interesting collection of art and crafts .It includes folk arts, textiles, Boshi Sen's personal collection, miniature paintings, woodworks. The museum also has an assortment of sculptures, terracotta, coins, bronzes, musical instruments, ivory copper plates, beads, manuscripts and many other things.
Loka Sangraha, Bhimtal :
Loka Sangraha is located at Gita Dham Complex of Bhimtal.It was established in the year 1983. The museum houses Stone tools, shells, water colour paintings, pottery, bricks, prehistoric implements, combs, wooden and metal utensils, flags, textiles, wooden carved plaques, manuscripts, basketry and many other things. It remains closed from July to September.
War Museum , Ranikhet :
The War Museum is situated at the Kumaon Regimental Center in Ranikhet.It was setup in the year 1978.The museum displays various types of army materials including War Trophies, flags, uniforms, manuscripts, paintings, rifles, important historical documents weapons.
Group Museum And Archives, Roorkee :
Group museum and archives of Roorkee is located at Bengal Engineer Group and Center. The museum was established in the year 1978. This museums contains historical documents, books, pamphlets, paintings, photographs, of Bengal Engineer Group, Roorkee.It also showcases several medals, portraits, weapons.
Zonal Museum, Dehradun :
Zonal Museum of Dehradun is located inside Anthropological Survey of India on Hardwar Road. The Anthropological Survey of India established the museum in the year 1971. Physical and Cultural Anthropology of the North Western India, including the Central and Western Himalayas are preserved in the museum.
Exhibits of Museums in Uttarakhand :
Subir Raha Oil Museum illustrates the search for oil and the history of oil. Corbett Museum is dedicated to Jim Corbett, the renowned hunter turned environmentalist who had worked for wildlife conservation. This museum illustrates the life and activities of Jim Corbett in the jungle of the Kumaon hills. Geology and Geophysics Museum exhibits specimens of rocks, minerals, a wide collection of geological charts and models, etc. Roorkee Group Museum and Archives is an army museum which holds large volumes of documents, paintings and historical books. K Dev Bhoomi Wax Museum has about 26 statues of some of the influential personalities of India and the world. A noteworthy aspect of the Gobind Vallabh Pant Museum is a collection of ancient antique items related to Katyuri and Chand emperors, who had ruled Uttarakhand for a considerable period of time. Folk Culture Museum holds artifacts related to folk culture and rock art, cave paintings etc. Kumaon Regimental Centre Museum houses war artifacts of the Garhwal and Kumaon regiments.
